The Frisian Hemp Fiber Deal
Vereniging Circulair Friesland · NL
On 25 October 2024 over 30 parties — Frisian housing corporations, construction companies, developers and local authorities — signed a covenant committing to apply locally produced hemp fibre insulation (Hempwool, made by GreenInclusive) in at least 1,000 construction and renovation projects across Fryslân within three years. It launches the first complete regional chain for biobased building in the Netherlands: over 110 Frisian farmers gain stable demand and guaranteed prices, municipalities and the province drive uptake through biobased procurement in their tenders, and the CO₂ stored (over 1,700 tonnes) is recorded and certified. A replicable covenant-and-partnership model for the biobased transition.
